Since ancient times, mustard has been used not only as a hot seasoning, but also used for medicinal purposes. Even under Hippocrates, it was believed that it helps the intestines, promotes digestion, and relieves edema. Mustard was applied externally for bites, chest pains, used as a remedy to relieve coughs and against poisoning with poisonous mushrooms.
In ancient times, it was used to treat pulmonary hemorrhage, epileptic seizures, chronic tonsillitis and pleurisy. But they used it inside with caution, since the pungent and burning spice harmed the sick stomach.

For muscle pains, plasters, compresses and poultices are made from mustard. To make a compress, the mustard seeds were ground into flour, a little warm water was added and applied to a cloth, which was placed on the painful areas. Half an hour is enough for a mustard compress to help get rid of a severe headache if you apply it to the calf and neck area at the same time.
To remove mucus accumulation from the bronchi and lungs, to make the cough with phlegm more productive (so that the patient clears his throat well), the seasoning was taken orally:
- half a teaspoon of seeds must be mixed with a teaspoon of honey and half a spoonful of ghee (ghee)… This mixture should be consumed three times a day with warm water or hot milk.
For constipation and poor digestion:
- 5 seeds should be crushed and sprinkled with 1 teaspoon of honey. This mixture should be consumed 15 minutes before meals.
There were also contraindications for the use of mustard. The hot seasoning was not recommended for children under 12 years old, patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, ulcers in the digestive system, kidney inflammation, and pregnant women.
