The border is not just the border between the path and the flower bed, but one of the most important elements of the garden’s decoration, determining its structure.
In landscape design, it is customary to clearly outline individual fragments of the territory in order to create effective compositions. Borders – “border guards” of flower beds and lawns brilliantly cope with this mission. Curbs on the site can work wonders: for example, distract from unaesthetic household areas, forcing your gaze to slide towards a marvelous flower garden, completely ignoring the container with compost located next to it.

But the fence also has a more utilitarian task: on the one hand, to prevent weed roots from entering the lawn, and on the other hand, to prevent perennial grasses from spreading outside the designated area, for example, crawling into flower beds.
The curb prevents soil erosion and spreading after rain, and if you decide to break up a lawn of different varieties of plants, an elegant partition reliably isolates them from each other. Traditionally, stone, concrete, brick and other types of curbs are used, and recently even lighter and more mobile structures have appeared. And each of the options has its own advantages and disadvantages, installation and fastening methods.
The plastic lawn curb is made of dense polyethylene, an inexpensive material produced from industrial synthetic waste. Even a teenager can install these lightweight structures – they consist of fragments of different lengths, which are assembled into a typesetting canvas 13-20 cm wide.It is laid in a pre-dug groove, completely drowning or making it protrude.
The undoubted advantages of such borders: strength, durability and durability, they can be used many times. But they also have disadvantages, for example, the danger of deformation: in the spring you can find that the elements “stick out” from the soil.
Rubber curb tape
The most fashionable lawn detail last season. It is elastic, durable and, unlike a plastic border, performs not only a decorative, but also a practical function – it clearly divides the “spheres of influence” of soil, plants and gravel. The tape can be used as an edging for multi-layer flower beds and complex flower beds. Sold in rolls of 5-10 m, width from 10 to 20 cm.
The curb is installed in the grooves made according to the intended pattern and buried. For stability, you can pour crushed stone here. Having cut off the strips of the required length with scissors, they are overlapped and fastened with a furniture stapler or a special soldering iron.
Important: rubber is resistant to chemical attack and, unlike plastic, does not rattle in the rain.
Metal lawn curb
This is a set of thin profiles made of galvanized or stainless steel. The fragments are 10-30 cm wide and are firmly fixed in the soil. Metal has good flexibility, so it is suitable for creating lawns with curved lines.
Such a border does not need to be buried; it is simply driven into the ground with a plastic or wooden hammer, and then fixed with steel pins.
This is the name of the grooves dug along the perimeter of the lawn, because their popularity began precisely in the UK. The grooves are mulched – they are filled with peat or crushed wood chips.
Such a border will look dignified if it is cared for and cherished: level it, cut off the overgrown turf roots with special scissors, but without leaving the “foreigner” will overgrow with weeds.
Room for creativity, “piece goods”. Most often, to create such a fence, gardeners use ordinary concrete, which is poured into the prepared formwork or into decorative forms: containers for sweets and cookies, silicone baking tins … The borders with mosaics skillfully laid out from fragments of colored glass or ceramic tiles and even fragments of laser discs.
Until recently, the grass-planted lawn in front of the house played an episodic role in the landscape design of the site, only shading the cozy flower beds and luxurious mixborders. But now His Majesty the lawn is coming to the fore, this is a new trend in landscape fashion.
One of the tools that allows you to focus on the lawn is color. Now the lawn does not look like a monochrome surface, but becomes an exquisite composition. For example, an area of a lawn made of ordinary perennial grasses with inclusions of white clover and Moorish blooming “islets” looks more colorful and expressive. An interesting landscape technique is a combination of lawns of different types and purposes. But in this case, the fragments must be separated from each other by stylish borders.
For example, the sports lawn, intended for games and picnics, turns into an English lawn – a “front” surface that cannot be walked on. Grass “carpets” with different mowing techniques look spectacular, when mowed surfaces and areas with tall, unmown grass alternate. published by econet.ru
