Some, on the contrary, are chasing innovations, not paying any attention to their technical characteristics. This approach can lead to the fact that the thermal insulation will not be performed efficiently and the water supply will simply freeze.
Often people trust advertising too much and do not even bother to read the annotation to the material, in which the manufacturer indicates all the characteristics. It is imperative to demand from the seller a quality certificate for the purchased product. It is even better when the material has a voluntary certificate indicating the results of technical tests and independent verification of the characteristics of the insulation. Today, the most widespread are: mineral wool and glass wool, synthetic rubber, polyethylene foam. These materials are successfully used for pipeline insulation.
Mineral wool and glass wool – the most traditional material for pipe insulation
Mineral wool has excellent thermal insulation properties, but it is quite expensive. Mineral wool, glass wool and tow for insulating country water pipes have been used for a long time. Under the influence of moisture in the thickness of the earth, this type of insulation swells, sealing the joints. The service life of such heaters reaches 10 years, but by painting them with oil paint it can be extended up to 20 years.
Pipes wrapped with mineral wool or glass wool should be buried 50 cm into the ground and covered with roofing felt to avoid freezing. To be sure, with the onset of winter, the place where the pipe passes must be covered with snow. Naturally, this depth is permissible only for the regions of the middle lane. In the north and in Siberia, the pipe laying depth should be increased at least 2 times.
This insulation is produced in the form of cylinders specifically for pipes. Basalt fiber has high thermal insulation qualities. Therefore, such a water supply system will need frequent repairs. To improve the situation, it is necessary to use polyethylene in the construction and insulation of the water supply system. Polyethylene heat-insulating pipes are a comprehensive solution to the problem of water pipe insulation. A corrugated pipe is put on the insulating layer of polyethylene, which ensures complete tightness of the system and its elasticity at the same time.
Polyethylene is easy enough to install, but it is not very expensive. Pipes made of this material can be used both on newly installed systems at a summer cottage, and on already functioning ones. The pipes have a special latch, which provides a convenient dismantling of the thermal insulation if necessary.
Thermal insulation of a water supply system using high pressure
Knowledge of physical laws often helps to use some properties of substances in practice. It is generally known from the school course of thermodynamics that with increasing pressure, the crystallization temperature of liquids decreases significantly. Even when the water pressure reaches 3 atmospheres, it excludes freezing even in the coldest winter. Thanks to this knowledge, we can protect our suburban water supply system from freezing if we install a receiver on it. This device will help increase the pressure in the system.
If you are away from the country for a long time, you just need to turn on the receiver and start the pump. It is necessary to create a pressure in the system of at least 3-4 atmospheres. Please note that the pump for this must be able to raise the pressure to 7 – 8 atmospheres. In this state, the water supply system will not freeze if all its pipes are under pressure.
To start the water supply, you just need to turn off the receiver and release the pressure. When using this method, a check valve must be installed behind the pump, which will protect the system from excessive pressure and destruction. In general, when using a receiver, you need to be completely confident in the strength of the entire plumbing system. For this purpose, immediately after installation, pressure testing should be performed at the required pressure with a margin.
Thermal insulation of a water supply using a heating cable
There are times when the trench cannot be dug deep enough due to the high water table. In this case, you can use an electric heating cable. It is simply wrapped in a spiral around the pipe and connected to the network. Such a cable can consume only 10 watts of electricity, which is quite enough to keep the water from freezing. The heating cable can also be used in combination with other heaters, especially in problem areas of the pipe, for example, when passing through the foundation. Note that the heating cable can also be placed inside the pipe. It is well insulated, so there will be no current breakdown.
Thermal insulation of country water pipes with air
A very interesting way to insulate a water supply system is to use warm air coming out of the ventilation of a basement or cellar. If you place a water supply pipe inside a pipe of a larger diameter and run warm air there, you can achieve the desired result. To supply warm air to the outer pipe, it is connected to the ventilation of the cellar or basement, and the other end is brought out. In this case, a suction deflector must be installed in this air channel, which will allow the air to circulate faster, preventing it from cooling.

The most famous method of insulation is the use of polyurethane foam shells. If this insulation is installed and used correctly, then its service life can exceed 50 years. For the installation of such a heater, you will need the shell itself in the required amount, adhesive tape, staples and clamps. You will also need a special glue. An important condition for thermal insulation is a very tight fit of the shell to the pipe. There should be no uncovered areas at all.
This insulation has a layer of waterproofing made of fiberglass or foil, which perfectly protects against moisture penetration. The thermal conductivity of polyurethane foam is very, very low. This will allow you to almost completely retain the heat of the water flowing through the water supply. In addition, this material is cheap and very easy to install. The most economical and convenient option for warming a country water supply system is the use of a polyurethane foam shell.
Its size and shape can be different: both standard and non-standard. They insulate joints and curved sections of the pipeline. Any damaged section of the insulation can always and easily be replaced with a new one without having to dismantle the entire water supply system.
The main limitation when installing polyurethane foam on pipes is the inadmissibility of getting wet. Installation can only be carried out in dry weather, since moisture trapped under the shell will completely negate all the thermal insulation qualities of this material.
