An automatic irrigation system in a summer cottage or a personal plot significantly improves the quality of life on it. If the beds and flower beds are moistened by themselves, then time is freed up, which can be spent more interestingly in the summer.
Automatic watering of the garden and greenhouse
In this publication, we will consider the option of organizing watering a vegetable garden and a greenhouse using a specific example. The vegetable garden consists of 7 narrow stationary beds 60 cm wide and about 6 m long. In a small greenhouse (3 × 4 m) there are 3 stationary beds of the same width where tomatoes and peppers grow. It is better for garden and greenhouse plants to supply warm, settled water, and not ice from the main water supply.
To irrigate the garden and greenhouse, as well as to always have a reserve in case of interruptions in water supply, at the very beginning of the development of the site, a large barrel was installed (volume about 5.5 m³). Previously, it was filled with water, a hose was attached, and the garden was watered by hand. A Belarusian set for automatic irrigation “Aquadusya” was used in the greenhouse. The system in question has been in effect for the second year, but it continues to improve.
To simplify the process and reduce water consumption, the first version of the automatic irrigation system was installed last year. So, the vegetable garden is located between the house and the bathhouse, and the container is behind the bathhouse. A shallow trench was dug between the path and the ends of the beds, where a welded main was laid – a polypropylene pipe with branches to each box.
We welded it using a special welding machine. Of course, the need to have this tool increases the cost of the irrigation system, because its price is from 1,000 to 10,000 rubles. You can assemble a system of HDPE (low pressure polyethylene) pipes. The plus is that in this case nothing will have to be welded, and the minus is that all fittings (connecting elements) are more expensive than polypropylene fittings.
In one place, I had to lay this pipe under the path, so as not to stumble later. A similar pipe was extended to the greenhouse – but over the ground along the fence. At the end of the pipe, a plug was made to drain the water in the fall, then everything was checked for leaks and buried.
Drip tapes, which were purchased from a garden store, were attached to the pipe bends, and they were spread along the plantings, the ends were muffled. The width of the belts is 16 mm. The length in a roll is 50 m. It is necessary to determine how many tapes to put on the bed according to the needs of the planted culture. Somewhere it takes 2, somewhere – 1 irrigation line.
Initially, we planned to install an irrigation timer on the barrel, which was purchased 2-3 years ago from a well-known manufacturer. But we did not take into account that that device could only work from the water supply: to turn it on, it needed more pressure than is formed at the outlet of the barrel. Therefore, it was decided to re-install the Aquadusya system indoors. So the greenhouse was watered automatically last year, but to water the garden, the water had to be turned on manually.
The system has been improved this year. We ordered a timer for gravity systems in China in advance and installed it at the exit from the barrel. Now you can set the frequency of watering and its duration.
And it worked even better. There is no longer the need for Aquadus in the greenhouse. Now they just brought a hose there and made a layout in the beds. True, the tapes were not laid out here, but a dropper was brought to each plant – they remained after using Aquadusi. By the way, the control module in this system ran on 8 AA batteries, while the Chinese timer requires only 2 AAA.
In the flower garden with perennial plants, they put not a tape, but a drip tube, because it is easier to bend it as needed. It is significantly more expensive, but I hope it will be more durable.
Even this year, they made a branch from the main pipe to the barrel and installed a float shut-off system – it became easier to fill the container with water. Previously, they just threw a hose into it and looked to see if it was overflowing.
Now this system is working properly and we are quite satisfied. Watering the garden and greenhouse is no longer a concern, so you can safely go to the sea for a couple of weeks. A video has been published on our channel where you can see the irrigation system in more detail.
I think such a system is not only convenient, but also durable. We carefully collected and reeled the drip tapes last fall, and put them out again this year. It is difficult to say how many years they will last, but they are not very expensive either. published by econet.ru
