Hidden dangers of high voltage lines

Researchers at the University of Bern have published data on the danger of high-voltage lines to the life and health of people who have to live near them. Scientists argue that exposure to radiation on the body increases the risk of age-related changes, the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The negative impact of high-voltage lines on the human body was first discovered in the 60s of the last century. Thorough health studies of people living close to power lines or in contact with them at work have revealed alarming facts. Almost all of the subjects reported chronic fatigue, mood swings, sleep disturbances, irritability, progressive forgetfulness, and other cognitive problems.

Harmful effects of electromagnetic fields

Scientists at the University of Bern studied census data for 95% of the Swiss population. They found out that those who lived in the area 50 meters from high-voltage power lines, the risk of death from Alzheimer’s disease is 1.24 times higher than among those living at a distance of 600 m from the main lines.

The duration of exposure also exacerbates the risks. Just five years of living next to trunk lines increases the likelihood of dying from Alzheimer by 1.51 times, ten years – 1.71 times, and fifteen years – 2 times. Practically the same results have been obtained for senile dementia.

Hidden dangers of high voltage lines

Scientists cannot yet accurately explain the reasons for the negative effects of electromagnetic fields. American researchers suggest that power lines ionize dust particles in the air. They enter the human body and then the ions charge the cells, which disrupts their functions and causes damage.

The danger of power lines is directly related to the voltage of the electric current that is transmitted through them. On trunk lines, it is 220-380 kilovolts. Studying them differs from local lines, which transmit current over shorter distances with much lower voltage. In addition, many household appliances, such as microwave ovens and some types of electrical wiring, emit magnetic fields of especially low frequencies. published by
