Many are interested in how to install an electric boiler, what are the requirements, whether a permit is needed for this. Let’s clarify.
No matter how much they talk about the unprofitableness of heating housing with a system with an electric boiler, such equipment is in demand. In some cases, there is no alternative. In other options, it is possible to heat with a solid fuel unit, but not everyone will like it. Therefore, the installation of an electric boiler is relevant both for the purpose of heating a private house and an apartment in the city.

Unlike gas equipment, electric boilers are installed less troublesome both in terms of installation and in terms of collecting permits. If the heated area is small (up to 100 m2), an electric boiler with a capacity of up to 10-12 kW is sufficient for heating it. As a rule, such units are powered from a 220 V household electrical network and consume a single-phase electric current. In this case, no approvals are required. One has only to find out from the power engineers whether the power of the transformer in your area is enough to provide the electric boiler with energy.
More powerful units require a three-phase connection (380 V). If there are no three phases, you will need to do it (hold). In this case, you will need the appropriate approvals, permits and material costs for the performance of certain types of work.
It is advisable at the same time to replace the counter with a three-mode one, so that the operation of electric water heating equipment is as economical as possible.
Now we will give recommendations for the location of the electric boiler. They should be observed for safety reasons.
- Almost all boilers powered by electricity must be installed outside living quarters. It may not necessarily be a boiler room, but a technical room with limited access to households. On a residential area, it is allowed to install factory heating elements of small (up to 12-16 kW) power.
- It must not be allowed that the strapping elements represent a load on the structure of the electrical appliance. Therefore, the hot pipe and return pipe should be rigidly fixed to the wall.
- It is necessary to avoid the situation when the cables supplying the boiler are located under water or heating lines. If it does not work otherwise, the wires must be placed in cable channels or protected by special boxes (both are better).
- The unit must be connected to the power supply directly from the control room using a cable with conductors of the cross-section recommended by the manufacturer.
- It is imperative to ground an electrical appliance for heating, whatever type or capacity it is. This will prevent the risk of electric shock.
How to install an electric boiler correctly
Modern heating units powered by electricity, according to the principle of converting the latter into thermal energy, are divided into three main types:
- with heating element;
- ionic (electrolysis).
It is better to entrust the installation of the last two types of devices to specialists. Firstly, the products are quite expensive (it would be a pity to damage anything during installation). Secondly, you should know exactly the connection and piping diagrams of such electric boilers, which have many nuances.
With factory (there are also home-made) boilers that are equipped with heating elements, everything is much easier both in terms of installation and connection. Therefore, we will consider these issues using the example of such products. According to the installation method, such electrical appliances are:
The first products are usually compact, lightweight, and low-power. To the wall, depending on the material of its manufacture, they are attached with powerful dowels or special screws. During installation, pay attention to the fact that the product is located according to the vertical and horizontal levels. Often, such electrical appliances are placed in pre-prepared niches. The installation height must be such that the bottom of the boiler is at least 1.5 m above the floor surface.
Floor products are more massive. They are usually equipped with special stands (legs) that allow you to adjust the position in space. The base in the place of installation must be solid, waterproof, not conductive to electric current. A tiled floor is ideal for these purposes. Before installing a floor-standing electric boiler, it is advisable to bring the necessary communications and lay an electric cable.
Connection and piping of an electric boiler
Modern prefabricated electric heat generators represent a mini-boiler room. That is, they are equipped not only with automation regulating the work, but also with a circulation pump, as well as a throat for pouring a coolant. Some models also have a built-in closed expansion tank. Therefore, the piping scheme for such a boiler is quite simple. To turn on the electric boiler into the heating system, you will need:
- Ball Valves;
- coarse filter (sump);
- expansion tank (if the unit is not equipped with it);
- check valve.
The hot pipe of the heating system is connected to the corresponding branch pipe of the electrical appliance through the ball valve and the “American”. The return line is attached to the electric boiler in the same way, but additional elements are installed on it according to this scheme. If you take it along the way to the boiler, you need to sequentially cut into the return pipe:
- water filter (mud collector);
- expansion tank (if needed);
- check valve;
- a pipe for draining the coolant with a shut-off valve.
It is advisable to put a faucet in front of the mud collector in order to be able to remove the filter for cleaning.
This is how the piping of electric heating boilers is made and a modern factory electric boiler equipped with a heating element is connected to the heating system. With boilers of other types (electrolysis and induction), everything is more complicated. There, the scheme should additionally include special elements necessary in the piping of just such units. Therefore, it is better not to take on this business without special knowledge and skills.
Connecting the boiler to the power supply
An electric boiler, even of low power, carries a large load on the household power grid. Therefore, an individual cable of a certain section from the electrical panel is drawn to it. If the boiler is single-phase, with certain skills, the device can be connected to electricity independently. With a three-phase unit, everything is much more complicated, so you cannot do without the help of an electrician.
Even connecting an electric boiler designed for 220 V, you need to follow certain rules. The scheme must necessarily include:
- individual automatic switch (machine) corresponding to the throughput capacity;
- RCD for emergency shutdown.
You can include one of the above devices in the power supply circuit of the heating device. But, as practice shows, an extra degree of protection when it comes to electricity is never superfluous.
The electric cable supplying energy to the electric boiler must be laid in such a way that there is constant access to it. That is, it should not be walled up in the wall. It is better to lay the wire on top of the wall finishing layer in the cable channel and close it with a removable decorative box. Do not allow wire connections by twisting, make possible contacts of copper with aluminum using special docking devices.
The installation and connection of the electric boiler to the heating system and power supply can be done independently only when you are confident in your abilities.
