Savvy gardeners have long noticed the unique properties of iodine and successfully use this penny remedy for the treatment and prevention of fungal plant diseases.
Iodine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic that “disarms” a wide variety of bacteria, fungi and other protozoa that cause infectious and inflammatory diseases in humans. But the useful properties of the drug do not end there: it can be successfully used to maintain the health of cultural plantings.
Iodine – to maintain the health of cultivated plants
Savvy gardeners have long noticed the unique properties of iodine and successfully use this penny remedy for the treatment and prevention of fungal plant diseases. But in this case, iodine turns out to be more selective: it is able to suppress the activity of only some pathogens. However, the value of summer cottage “iodine therapy” is that it allows you to save plants from just those ailments that cause the greatest damage, threatening a complete loss of crops.

1. Late blight
First of all, undoubtedly, it is worth noting late blight – a dangerous fungal infection that, without preventive measures, very quickly destroys all tomato bushes. Nevertheless, if you always have a couple of iodine bubbles at hand in your country house, this ailment is not terrible for tomatoes.
To protect plants from late blight 12-14 days after planting the seedlings in the ground, start regularly spraying them with a solution prepared from 9 liters of water, 1 liter of milk whey (it can be replaced with natural skim milk) and 2 ml of pharmacy iodine of 5% concentration, repeating the procedures at intervals of 10 -12 days.
Previously, at my summer cottage, for the prevention of late blight, I used exclusively purchased fungicides, but once, on the advice of a friend, I tried an iodine solution in business, pushed expensive chemistry into the background. The above recipe alternates with other folk remedies, but only after “iodine therapy” I see such a stunning effect on tomato bushes: a day or two after processing, the foliage becomes juicy and acquires a wonderful emerald hue. Plants are simply full of health!
An iodine solution prepared according to this recipe will be useful for the prevention of late blight and other crops of the nightshade family – pepper, eggplant and potatoes. Therefore, when processing tomatoes with such a drug, be sure to walk with a sprayer along the garden bed with their “cousins”.

If you notice the first affected leaves on the plants, immediately remove them from the bushes and immediately spray the plantings with iodine elixir, repeating the procedure 1-2 more times with an interval of 4-5 days – the insidious late blight should recede. But keep in mind that at an advanced stage of the disease, iodine will no longer help…
2. Powdery mildew
A solution based on iodine will be an excellent helper in the fight against another fungal disease – powdery mildew, which, unlike late blight, “eats away” plants more slowly, but has an equally destructive effect on them. With unfavorable factors, this disease is most often picked up by cucumbers, zucchini and pumpkins.
- But if, upon detecting the first signs of a disease, you start to treat the plants with a solution (9 liters of water, 1 liter of milk whey and 1 ml of iodine), repeating the procedure every 5-7 days, you can completely get rid of white bloom in a short period of time.
- In addition, experienced gardeners claim that when using iodine elixir on cucumbers, the lashes continue to remain green for much longer and delight with a longer fruiting period. They advise sprinkling cucumbers on the leaf with this solution a couple of times at intervals of 10-12 days, even if there are no signs of powdery mildew.
Berry and ornamental shrubs, as well as fruit trees, affected by powdery mildew, more “thick-skinned” in comparison with vegetable crops. To cleanse their leaves from white bloom, the concentration of the iodine solution is needed higher – 5 ml per bucket of water.

But herbaceous ornamental crops are easy to cure from this ailment with the same solution as for vegetables: 1 ml for 10 liters of water. In this case, for a heightened effect, it is also better to take not ordinary water, but a solution of whey or milk (1: 9).
3. Root rot of cucumbers
A solution prepared from 10 liters of water and 1 ml of pharmaceutical iodine is effective protects cucumbers from root rotwhich often ruin plantings in cold rainy or excessively hot weather. But now the sprayer can be put aside: the solution must be poured under the root of the plants, spending 1 liter for each bush.
4. Decay of zucchini ovary
Zucchini is a fairly prolific crop and, with proper agricultural technology, always sets a large number of fruits. But often, even with good care and favorable weather conditions, the numerous ovary on the bushes begins to rot.

A similar phenomenon can be a sign of iodine starvation, which can be easily corrected by applying once under each bush 1 liter of solution prepared from 10 liters of water and 5 ml of iodine. In order not to cause an excess of iodine in zucchini, after such feeding during the season it is better not to use iodine-containing solutions.
5. Keela of cabbage
Cabbage is another vegetable crop that responds positively to iodine therapy. For this lady, a drug is prepared from 10 liters of water and 2 ml of iodine, fed at the root at the rate of 1 liter per 1 plant. Such a delicacy is given to cabbage at the beginning of the formation of heads of cabbage, repeating feeding 2 more times with an interval of 15-17 days. This simple and economical measure reliably protects the plants from keels and has the best effect on the quality and size of the heads.
6. Gray rot of strawberries
The iodine solution has also proven itself in the strawberry garden. Garden strawberries, treated with iodine solution 2 times with an interval of 5-7 days shortly before the beginning of flowering and once more after it, shows high resistance to damage by gray rot and is not damaged by the raspberry-strawberry weevil.
For this purpose, 1 ml of pharmaceutical iodine is diluted in a bucket of water (10 l), and then strawberry bushes and soil in the aisles are abundantly moistened with it.
7. Fruit rot of apple trees
A concentrated solution based on 10 liters of water and 10 ml of iodine effectively protects apple trees from a very insidious ailment – fruit rot. For this purpose, the trees are sprayed on the leaf with such an elixir about a month before the expected harvest and the treatment is repeated again after 3-4 days.
8. Mildew and Grape Powder
Experienced winegrowers have long appreciated the pharmacy antiseptic and use it as a reliable assistant in the fight against powdery mildew and mildew. At the first signs of these fungal diseases, grape bushes are abundantly moistened from a sprayer with a solution prepared from 10 liters of water and 8 ml of iodine, repeating the procedure every week.

9. Treatment of seeds before sowing
Few people know that iodine can act as an effective means of disinfecting seeds before sowing. For this purpose, you need only one drop of a pharmaceutical preparation, which is diluted in 1 liter of settled water. In such a disinfectant solution, it is necessary to moisten a piece of gauze or cotton cloth, wrap the seeds in it and leave the bundle for 6-8 hours. After that, the seed is dried without washing to flowability and sown in seedling containers or on a garden bed.

10. Processing potatoes before planting
Potato seed tubers are also disinfected with an iodine solution shortly before planting. For this purpose, 2 ml of an antiseptic is added to 10 liters of water and the tubers, laid out in one layer in a shaded corner of the garden, are irrigated with the resulting product. When the tubers are dry, they are turned over to another barrel and the procedure is repeated. After this treatment, the potatoes emerge much faster. It builds up more lush bushes and shows high resistance to late blight and scab.
I would like to reassure especially suspicious summer residents who are afraid of the use of iodine solution in their personal plot. The above recipes, containing in their composition the minimum dose of this drug (which is initially taken already in 5% concentration, and then diluted with a large amount of water), cannot harm our health. Before “settling” in the fruits of vegetable or fruit crops, iodine will go a long way, and those micrograms that get to our table will not be harmful, but just the opposite.
Iodine is especially useful for residents of central Russia who live at a considerable distance from the sea coasts and are forced to solve the problem of iodine deficiency by actively eating seafood or regularly taking medicines with a trace element. But nevertheless, it is worth adhering to the above-described consumption rates of this pharmaceutical preparation in the country house. After all, overly diligent iodine therapy can undermine the health of plants and dreams of a rich harvest will have to be postponed until next season.published econet.ru…
