Vitamin D and Curcumin for Alzheimer’s Disease

Scientists from the University of California have published the results of a study that examined the combined effects of vitamin D and curcumin in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers believe that the combination of these nutrients can activate the immune system to rid the body of inflammatory toxins and beta-amaloid plaques associated with this disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of senile dementia characterized by a loss of basic cognitive functions. According to experts, there are more than 26 million people with this diagnosis in the world, and by 2050 this number may quadruple. There are currently no medications that can completely cure it or significantly alleviate the symptoms.

How does the combination of curcumin with vitamin D work?

Through experiments, scientists have found that these nutrients work great in tandem. Curcuminoid helps leukocytes (white blood cells) attach to protein compounds that form beta-amaloid plaques, and vitamin D increases the rate at which proteins destroy toxic substances.

The researchers applied curcumin and a vitamin to test blood samples from Alzheimer’s patients. They found a significant effect of their influence: these substances helped the immune system to actively rid the blood of toxins and waste products.

Vitamin D and Curcumin for Alzheimer's Disease

The discoveries made it possible to explain why people living in hot countries and constantly consuming the seasoning of turmeric very rarely suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. For example, in India, less than 1% of the population over 65 years old is susceptible to this ailment, and in America the figure exceeds 10%.

As a rule, patients with Alzheimer’s disease simultaneously suffer from brain amyloidosis – a disease in which the immune system is unable to destroy beta-amaloid plaques from the brain… Curcumin and vitamin D, being safe natural substances that do not provoke side effects, actively stimulate the body’s defenses and help fight the symptoms of age-related extinction.
